My MAC keeps freezing, I get a "shut down computer" prompt.? I was just minding my own business on the web today when my MAC all of a sudden froze and I was faced with a prompt (written in 4 different languages) that says "You need to shut down your MAC, either force quit or press and hold the power button." There is absolutely no way around it, I have to hold the power button to restart the computer. It's totally frozen, the mouse doesn't move or anything.
After I turn it off I have to wait a few minutes before turning it back on, otherwise I get a gray screen and it beeps at me loudly (3 beeps at a time), until I turn it off and let it sit longer. It seems to be doing it randomly I've never been doing the same thing twice when this happens. And it all started today.
I didn't download anything new, or open any strange files. I did however just install a bunch of updates for my MAC. Is anyone out there having the same problems? Or know how I can fix it?? I've downloaded the CamAvx scan but it can't ever get through a full scan before I get prompted to shut down again.
HELP Please!!
This computer is less than a year old!! If the RAM is bad Apple and I are going to be having words. My software is up to date, which is what the link posted takes me to. But it answers what's wrong. I got a MAC because I went through 3 PC's in less than 3 years with these same issues.
Cool Guy replied: "Dang that sounds scary... Maybe it was the system updates? My mac sometimes freezes but it never gives me that message... hmmm :S"
mac_fixit replied: "Its not a virus its a kernal panic
Info on fixing the problem is here"
Katy O replied: "To fix this you should buy a PC"
Aaron replied: "I checked what the three beeps is.
It means the ram has gone bad and should be replaced."
mac- safari keeps freezing? my safari keeps freezing, particularly on facebook. is there any way to do like ctrl+alt+del like on a PC to shut the web page? it acts like it is loading and the page comes up but then the loading bar at the bar for the web address stops and the mouse that turns into a rainbow wheel stops moving...
Steve replied: "go down and click on the safari icon in the toolbar for 3 seconds and options would show up if it wasnt responding (the rainbow spinner) it would have an option to "force quit" select that and in like 5 seconds it will quit.
another cammand would be "cammand q"
another way is to go to the apple in the bar at the top left corner and click the option that says force quit. then click on safari and click okay."
annorax64 replied: "Yes, all you have to do is press Command-Tab to change to Finder, click on the Apple logo at the upper-left of the screen, choose "Force Quit...", select Safari from the list presented, and then click the "Force Quit" button.
To possibly fix the issue with Safari hanging, I would:
- run the Disk Utility program (its in the Utilities directory under Applications)
- select your Macintosh HD
- click "Repair Disk Permissions""
Hello replied: "The most likely cause is a bloated registry which has become the home for all kinds of useless bits and pieces of data. Whenever any change is made to the system settings or a program is installed or uninstalled, a new entry is generated in the registry. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There is a multitude of useless bits and pieces to be removed.Parts of uninstalled programs, parts of incompletely installed programs, dead drivers and many other things. clean your registry and remove all the useless data fragments and no longer needed information to fix the freeze error! I should like to commend Registry Easy to you ! You can try ! Good luck!"
Why does my mac keep freezing? Recently my Ibook g4 started to freeze up. And what I meen by "freeze" is everything becomes nonoperational. The mouse, keyboard, and OSX are frozen. If something is loading, and the spinning wheel is up, it will stop spinning and stand still. And then if I shut it off and reboot, it will freeze to a blue screen and not boot. Here's the catch though, if I leave it off and plugged in for varying amounts of time, the time it does not freeze also varies according to the time it was plugged in. If it freezes and I reboot it right after, it will stick to blue screen. But, if I let it sit, off and charging all night I will be able to use it for around 20 minutes before it freezes. What the heck?
fenderguy36 replied: "Here are some suggestions.
Go to finder - applications - utilities - activity monitor. Read through the processes that are going on, if there is anyting out of the ordinary quit the process. Also try - applications - utilities - disk utility.
Select your hard drive, then select first aid - verify permissions. Wait till fiinshed, shouldnt take too long. Then click on repair disk permissions, and wait till finished. You should do this once a week to keep your mac smooth. Now restart and see if it is better. Hope it works!"
D_Icon replied: "Have you recently installed any software? If so, the application may be interfering with a previously installed application. Uninstall it and see if it improves.
It could be a hardware problem and thus harder to track down. Did your Mac come with a hardware test CD? If so, run it so it can check the health of your Mac's various components.
If the Disk Utility and Activity Monitor solutions don't work out, you may need a heavy hitter like Tech Tool Deluxe."
My computer keeps freezing? My Apple Mac iBook G4 keeps freezing when I go on to various sites. The mouse turns into a colourful turning wheel and I have to restart the whole computer to unfreeze it. It usualy happens when I am on Safari. What can I do to prevent this problem?
i love youux3 replied: "You might want to call up Geek Squad or go to a computer mechanic and ask them.
It's probably that your computer has a firewall against something on those sites."

My iBook G4 keeps freezing...any help? My Mac Ibook G4 keeps on freezing indefinately about 5-10mins after it turns on. I had recently changed the screen. The only thing I can do is force shutdown or taking the battery out. Sometimes the mouse pad still works while its frozen meaning its still visibly moving but everything else just stops. What is the problem? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Trying not to go to apple and paying a load. Thanks
Beast replied: "*GASP* a mac with issues?! *looks for the mac fanboys and fangirls* macs are superior huh?! lol
Sorry i had to get that out... now to troubleshooting
First thing.. have you ever been able to get it to start working? i mean after a while does it work properly?
Second... what changes have you made recently that could have caused it? uninstall anything that was JUST before this started happening..
It could be though that something is wrong with the hardware itself and you'll need to being it in."
Ryan K replied: "It is not your screen. Most of the time it is a corrupt operating system or at least part of an operating system. What you need to do is put you Mac OS X disk in the CD drive. turn off the machine hold the "c" key on your key board the turn the machine on. This will tell your Mac to boot from the CD drive. It will bring you to an installer menu Click your language. Don't worry you are not going to install the OS again (yet) Now click on Installer in the top left of the screen and then click on disk utility. Select your hard drive (Probable called Hard Disk one or whatever name appears under the hard drive icon on the desktop) Not the model hard drive. Then click verify disk permissions and when that is finished click repair disk permissions. After that click verify disk then when that is finished click repair disk. If that doesn't work you can reinstall the OS with out losing any of your documents and music (It will just install the OS and put the OS that doesn't work in a folder call OS X old) It is called an inline install. And if you don't know how to do it the information is in the OS X book that came with your Mac."
my Mac keeps crashing ! help!? The keyboard and mouse pad become unresponsive and the screen freezes. I am running Leopard OSX . My mac freezes at random tangets like when I'm logging in, running an application or waking it from sleep mode. I have ran fsck -yf in applejack, reset the nvram and pram, and repaired permissions so Im not sure what the problem is. Is my logic board failing?
only REAL answers no idiotic suggestions. I have a PC but my mac has a faster CPU so I use it more often.
Tech replied: "macs have great stuff but a terrible OS install xp"
Chester The molester replied: "omg i know exactly what you need... first you need to get some of these
after you get those use super glue and glue them to the monitor...
after that everything will be safe but for a precaution you might want one of these
and after you are fully protected from crashes, get a useful computer"
Volund replied: "Take it to the apple store and tell them to deal with it, don't bother trying to troubleshoot a mac on your own, they are designed to lock you into their services. Just bring it down there and drop it off, they are good with replacements because they make way to much money on what they are selling you.
I would say get a real computer, but that isn't really helpful to you."

MAC OS X: How do I make my cursor always visible? And also change its look? And why is Explorer 5.2 freezing? I have a Mac 17" Powerbook with OSX. I can change the speed of the cursor with no problem, but I hate the way it disappears if I am not actively using it, especially in WORD. I want to make it always visible.
I was also thinking about making it hot pink to see more easily but then I went to a cursor site (Cursor mania) and they have such a cute mouse cursor, that's what I want (I am into mice). But Cursor mania does not work on Mac.
And when I tried its sister site, which calls for Explorer, my Explorer 5.2 kept freezing (I always use Safari so it hasn't been used for a year). it opens and then freezes after failing to reach a site.
So these are my questions:
1. How do I make the cursor stay visible all the time?
2. What cursor site does Macs?
3. Why can't I open Explorer anymore?
Mike M replied: "1. As far as I know, there's no option to keep the mouse cursor from being hidden when you type. However, there's an option to make the arrow bigger when it is visible: in System Preferences, click on the Universal Access icon (in the System category), then the Mouse & Trackpad tab, then drag the Cursor Size slider to your liking.
2. The only way to customize cursors on OS X that I know of is a "haxie" from Unsanity called Mighty Mouse. Most of their haxies, MM included, don't work yet on Leopard due to changes Apple made under the hood, but it'll work fine if you're running Tiger (OS X 10.4) on your PowerBook (click the Apple menu, then About This Mac to find out).
3. No offense, but why would you even want to? Internet Explorer for the Mac is not only outdated by years and years, but IE is one of the worst browsers on any platform, s or Mac. Any site that *requires* Internet Explorer likely isn't worth any Mac user's attention. If you're looking for an alternative to Safari for the occasional page that doesn't work properly, I recommend either Firefox or Opera."
dotMac replied: "Mac OS X itself hides the cursor when you are editing a text.
Omni Dazzle is a good application that adds fancy effects to the mouse cursor. Try it at :
But it requires OS X 10.4.6 or above and a Core Image capable video card to run.
Cursor Mania does not replace cursor in s either. It is for webpages only.
However, you can use Safari itself for browsing a site that checks for IE. Here is the trick to do it :
1. Quit Safari.
2. Type the following command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
3. Launch Safari. Now you should be able to see a "Debug" menu on right of Help menu.
4. In the "Debug" menu, go to "User Agent" and select the browser you wish to simulate. (In this case s MS IE).
5. Now reload the website.
This trick fools most of the web sites."
my macbook pro keeps freezing!? wtf? i got a new macbook in probably early summer 2008, after about ... 3 months the computer began freezing frequently. it froze for the first time around 2-3 weeks after i bought it.
since then its become WAY more frequent and is really starting to piss me off... i've tried taking it into the macbook store but of course they cant do anything UNTIL IT ACTUALLY CRASHES.... right there is why i like my old computer...
well lets see.. i'll have ical, Firefox, mail, and chat open... sometimes itunes too. word occasionally.
but i'll leave it open and what not.. it'll reset itself sometimes which is normal, but theres others where i'll get up to get something out of the fridge while watching a movie, i'll come back and try to move the mouse to check my mail... NOTHING. so i'll wait a little bit,, try pressing the space bar... you know try to get it to react... lately closing it and opening it multiple time violently has seemed to start unfreezing it, but it only freezes again a few minutes later. still i just started reseting it manually, aka holding the power button down swearing at my computer...
i've tried to back up the data but the computer freezes during just that too.
any hints yall might have would really help me out... im trying not to throw this thing out my right now... seeing as i'm typing faster than it can comprehend.

mac mini...? I have a dell xps 400 recently its been acting up it keeps freezing and I have to restore my whole pc atleast three times a day. I can't even download anything or I'll get the blue screen of death and then have to restore it yet again. I was wondering if I get a mac mini is my keyboard, mouse, and monitor compatible with it?
travis replied: "Yes, they will all be compatible if they are usb. But make sure it comes with a (DVI-VGA) adapter for the monitor or you will have to buy one for $19. Great computer though."
gk replied: "Yes.. Love my Mini.. but it looks like the I-mac is a better deal right now,and it comes with Monitor(21")mouse and Keyboard."
mac os frozen!!!!!!! HELP BY TODAY PLEASE!!!!!!!? I was on my mom's mac os x and was on facebook. While updating my status page, I kinda clicked a few times in the status box (im used to using a s) and that spinning thing-(in s it's an hourglass)
kept spinning and now I think the page is frozen. I can move the cursor anywhere else except the toolbar with file, edit etc).
basically the cursor changes back to a regular mouse once it's moved away from the frozen facebook and toolbar i mentioned above.
now i've turned off the power at the power supply and then tried to turn it bk on but how do i get the screen to come on?
there's the monitor of the mac and a little box/device thing next to it which has 3 buttons. It's the power one and two other ones which I cant distinguish as I havent used a mac b4 and i need info as soon as possible because my mom's coming bk and if she finds out that ive used her computer shes gonna kill me.
DizzyManDem replied: "Ooh! Mac users told me it would never freeze. Listen kid, s is better, 'cause we get plenty of viruses there's plenty of support. Ive been browsing for your problem but all there is, is a load of get a mac ads and Pcs are rubbish forums.
This may be helpful (and cheaper): Get A PC"
Chris Down replied: "You say: "now i've turned off the power at the power supply and then tried to turn it bk on but how do i get the screen to come on?"
Did you not switch the PC off from it's own button first? If not, you could have damaged some components."

ISBN51499 replied: "If you had waited a little longer the spinning beach ball most likely would've gone away by itself. It usually means the Mac is running too many applications concurrently or running processor-intensive applications with limited RAM or free disk space.
I don't know what little/box device your talking about and if your mom is really gonna kill you, I'd suggest you pack a few things and run away, far far away :)
If you know which Mac she has, post the model and somebody might know what the device/box you are describing."
cc_of_0z replied: "The mac was not frozen, only the program you were using was. Next time this happens Click once on the Apple Logo in the top left corner and choose FORCE QUIT from the menu.
I'm guessing the Mac your Mum has is a Mac MIni (if it is about the size of a 10pack of CD boxes - silver sides and flat white on top with the apple logo - then that is it).
Anyhow look for a round circle silver button on the unit (about the size of a dime) with a picture like this C- on it.
That is your power button. Sometimes you have to hold it down for a few seconds before it activates.
Next time dont steal time on your mums computer.
For the s fanbois - get a real computer."
